Dec 8, 2007: Ragas and Time of Day

Indian music in incredibly complicated. In addition to all the nuances of major and minor notes, the particular style of playing them and the gharanas, Ragas are also associated with the time of the day. Take a look at this article for more information on this topic.

The theme of today's show was this association between Raga and time of the day. We played a series of tracks composed in Ragas that are associated with early morning, early afternoon, evening and late night. Take a look at the set of songs we played earlier today. Hopefully you enjoyed it.

Dec 1, 2007: Raga Hamsadhwani

Hello Listeners,
I dedicated the classical music section of today's show to Raga Hamsadhwani. Hamsa, in Sanskrit, means swan and Dhwani means voice. This raga is dedicated to the slow moving swan whose voice is supposed to attract one and all on this earth. Hamsadhwani is an extremely popular Raga in both the forms of Indian classical music i.e Hindustani and Carnatic classical. In today's show, I played various Hindustani and Carnatic classical compositions based on Raga Hamsadhwani. I hope you enjoyed the the nuances of performing this Raga on different instruments.
